The Partner’s Yacht - Now, Where Are the Clients’ ?

maltese falcon tom perkins.pngSpeaking of private equity, check out the new superyacht bought by Tom Perkins of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Its called the Maltese Falcon. I guess Tom is a Bogart fan.

It cost a paltry $130 million to be custom built in the shipyards of Turkey (Italy’s 35 hour work week would have meant Tom Perkins would have had to wait too long to enjoy his new toy).

It is the most sophisticated and advanced yacht ever built. If you notice, it is actually a sailboat with 3 massive masts. They are so high that if the Maltese Falcon were to sail in New York harbor, they would almost reach the tablet in the arm of Lady Liberty.

Oh wow, that’s nice. I don’t even particulary like boats either.

I have heard it said from a guy who hangs out with Roman Abramovich that keeping up with the Jones’s billionaire style involves having. One super yacht on the water, one being built, and one under design all at the same time.

    Andrew,
it looks even better inside. Wired or newsweek carried pictures of the cockpit and it looked stunning. You know a guy who knows Abramovich? small world ;-) What’s he like?

This guy is a Ferrari nut, so probably he met Abramovich through that avenue I’m guessing.

He’s a seminar presenter so not a personal aquaintance.

These notes are from September 9th 2006 in my journal:

    * Roman Abramovich worth 35BN, net worth increasing at 10BN this year.
    * New yacht ‘Ice’ being built this year
    - 141m long
    - 12 passengers, 57 crew
    - 6 state rooms
    - 4 heli pads, 3 helicopters
    - Bigger displacement than the titanic
    - Onboard submarine
    - Being built in Monaco at a cost of 700M Euros
    - Replacing his older yacht ‘Polarus’ at 114.7m long

Personally I wouldn’t be caught hanging out a yacht with only one submarine though.
